Pictures of Xomitla, Mexico

Xomitla (7000 ft altitude) is a town north of Orizaba (4000 ft altitude) where you can get a closeup view the Volcan Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico. The snow covered peak is just barely visible above other hills in Orizaba but it dominates the small village of Xomitla (show-MEET-la). To get here you have to take the La Perla bus a few blocks north of the center of Orizaba, and change buses for Xomitla from La Perla. The trip comes to about 20 pesos one way. There is a further destination for a few pesos more called Agua Escondido, but the recommended view was from Xomitla so I stopped here. I had a great view of the mountain all the way up in the bus, but as luck would have it, the minute I stepped out of the bus clouds rolled in obscuring the snow covered peak.

The main street of Xomitla with a little tienda left points the way to the mountain.. On the south side of town is the church with a school on the left. The mountain backdrop is dramatic.
