Pictures of Veracruz, Mexico

The city of Veracruz is steeped in the history of Mexico, but generally not of the favorable kind. It is the port of entry of three successful invasions and two more blockades. Although much evidence of these events has been preserved here, the humid climate tends to make this city less desirable as a tourist or expatriot destination. Further the port has been superceded by the oil port of Tampico to the north.

Generally looking northwest at the zocalo, the tables along the pedestrianized Calle Lerdo (in the distance) tend to attract what can be found of the elderly gringo crowd.

Looking west along Calle Lerdo several hotels above the restaurants that were once budget now have priced themselves out of that market. Looking across the zocalo southwest at the cathedral.
