Pictures of Veracruz (state), Mexico

On the map the state of Veracruz appears as a long ribbon of land hugging the gulf coast. The geography of this long, narrow political division is necessitated by the abrupt rise of the sierra madre oriental mountains just 50 miles from the coast. Although this does translate into many beaches in a warm climate, Veracruz has been bypassed on the Atlantic side as a tourist mecca by the Caribbean resorts such as Cancun. Since Veracruz is the oldest area in Mexico settled by Europeans, its older infastructure could be more costly to refashion.

In any event a vacation here, even in the city of Veracruz, is unlikely to be cluttered with other tourists, which could make it desirable for that reason alone. Most of the state is thought to be in a steamy, humid condition, but there is some variety here. In fact the highest peak in Mexico, the Pico de Orizaba, is just over the boarder in the state of Puebla only 65 miles from the coast. While most people know the state capital of Xalapa is in the highlands, these sierra madres hold stunning surprises like the cities of Orizaba and Zongolica that are known to very few outsiders. All in all Veracruz is a great place for exploration to vary your Mexican destinations.
