Pictures of Xochitecatl, Mexico

Xochitecatl (pronounced so-chi-TEH-catl) is an archeological site southwest of Tlaxcala City. There is a regular state sponsored guided excursion each Sunday at 10:15 am by bus from the zocalo in Tlaxcala. The site consists of three pyramids: Spiral, Serpent, and the highest, Flowers. Explored in 1969, it wasn't until 1994 that the pyramids were uncovered.

The sacredness of this site in enhanced by the fact that on a clear day you can see the towering Popocatepetl volcano to the west and the equally impressive La Malinche volcano to the east.      (Pictures taken May 2, 2004)

The tour starts here at the Spiral Pyramid, basically a round step pyramid. The green stairway to the top protects the steps. The Spiral pyramid lies on the west side of the complex and this is your view west from the top. The more northerly view from the top of the Spiral Pyramid.

Two more views of the Spiral pyramid looking west. It is believed to have been constructed between 1000 and 800 BC.
