Pictures of Tonantzintla, Mexico

Santa Maria Tonantzintla is a short local bus trip on your way from Cholula back to Puebla. Tonantzintla, Acatepec, and Tlaxcalancingo form a trio of towns along the way that seem to have competed in producing some of the finest dislays of decorative artistry in Mexico. Exteriors use local (talavera) tile and interiors employ intricate painting and gilding.      (Pictures taken May 4, 2004)

These three pictures show your short walk from the bus stop (left) to the church. You approach the back of the church first (center) and then walk around to the front (right).

The famous Templo de Santa Maria and front courtyard. Looking at the east trancept, the interior looks to have been planned by a professional decorator.
