If you don't take the express bus from Morelia to Mexico City you will go right through Zitacuaro. Certainly here you should not run into tourists, at least none from north of the boarder. There is quite a bit of activity to be found in the zocalo and the nearby market street Cinco de Mayo which boarders the zocalo to the east. One more street east is the main drag Revolucion Ave. where the bulk of the hotels are to be found.
