Pictures of Tzintzuntzan, Mexico

Tzintzuntzan on this and the next two pages proved to be one of the best photo opportunities of the trip. This town faces Lake Patzcuaro to the north (when you expect the lake to be west). In pre-Columbian times it was the capital of the region. The archeological zone is set on a large level terrace well above and south of the town that has trees and catches cool breezes from the lake. The town has a large wooded park with benches for resting and churches for visiting. You can get here for 5 pesos from the Patzcuaro bus station.

Looking south, these are the rounded base temples called "Yácatas" for which the Tzintzuntzan ruins are famous. If you have just walked up to the archeological zone from the town, these trees are welcome refreshment. Looking east, the lake is beyond. From near the spot where the lower left picture was taken, again looking east across the plaza to the temples (terrace out of picture left).

Looking east in the opposite direction from the picture above, this shows the construction of the terrace above the lake. Looking north more of the huge open plaza behind the temple structures. From behind the temples, looking east through the trees to the lake.
