Pictures of Taxco Viejo, Mexico

Taxco el Viejo is the original town 11 km south of Taxco where natives mined tin and silver. Polution of ground water, exhaustion of the mines, and the discovery of the lode north near the zocalo in Taxco contributed to the demise here and the rise of Taxco. Although there is no mining these days, Ex-Hacienda San Juan Bautista and Rancho Spratling are two places nearby that survive as workshops to produce fine silver jewelry. There is a motel north of town (Posada del Sol).      (Pictures taken April 24, 2004)

My walk was from Rancho Stratling south of town so most of these photos generally look north. Center looking east is the old (unused) aquaduct that served the mines. A creek still runs north to south beyond.

Still walking north you eventually come upon Iglesia San Francisco. Right is the view from the Iglesia looking north at another church on a hill in the countryside and small cemetery closer.
