Pictures of Rancho Spratling, Mexico

Rancho Spratling is the location of the workshop that William Spratling set up to manufacture his silver jewelry. It was he who put Taxco on the map because of this. He had big contracts with U.S. retailers that terminated just as he was gearing up (buying expensive equipment) for mass production so he went bankrupt.

At first I was unsure if I was trespassing when I entered the grounds on a Saturday, but was warmly welcomed and even offered a complimentary drink. They gladly gave me permission for these photos.      (Pictures taken April 24, 2004)

The bus south to Iguala will drop you off at the blue poles. There are herds of donkeys here. It appears deserted. Let yourself in the gate and walk the short road to the shop. The colorful hacienda is enchanting.

On the showroom coffee table were original jewelry designs by William Spratling in an old envelope. Craftsmen at work. A hand-drill is employed left and a torch right.
