Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, Mexico

The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa are an easy half-day excursion 52 km north out of Taxco. The history of the caverns includes the discovery in 1834 by Manuel Saenz de la Peņa, the public opening in 1920, and the designation as a national park in 1936. The park system has developed a tourist industry here that accomodates groups of approximately 50 each hour. Only 10 of the estimated 70 km of the cave system has been explored.      (Pictures taken April 25, 2004)
