| The Basilica of Guadalupe is surrounded by a complex of churches, chapels, and other attractions that front Tepeyac Hill some distance north of the city center. A vision of the the Virgin Mary appeared to a an indigenous farmer here in 1531 after he had been converted to Catholicism. Entrance is free and it is one of the best photo opportunities in the city. I only wonder what you could see in these pictures if the Mexico City air was clearer. |

| When you enter the gate you are in the Plaza of the Americas. Ahead is the Old Basilica (left), the Capuchin Chapel (right), and the Chapel of Tepeyac on the Cerro del Tepeyac (above center). | Souveneir stands crowd the plaza in front of the Old Basilica. The soft earth under the old basilica made it dangerous when too many people crowded in. |
