| Coyoacán, Mexico City |
|---|
| Coyoacán became Cortez's home and base of operations while Mexico City was being rebuilt after the conquest. The city derives its Nahuatl name from coyotes that must have been here once. At least we know that the origin of the word is not european. This flat land just off the lake would have been easy to defend since the Spaniards with horses had tremendous advantage breaking formations in open field fighting, Cortez home and that of his interpreter-mistress Doña Marina, La Malinche still exist here.
The area is still a bohemian magnet as it was in the days of Leon Trotsky and Frieda Kahlo whose homes are now museums here. Is you venture from sedate San Angel on foot as I did you will find Coyoacán's adjoining squares of Jardin del Centenario and Plaza Hidalgo a more up front in your face rodeo where you can be entertained for a few hours. The pictures on this page relate the walking journey from San Angel. |
