San Angel, Mexico City

South of central Mexico City San Angel is an upscale residential area with charming, intimate plazas that provide vendor space for local and countrywide artists especially on the weekends. A metro ride down to the MN de Quevedo station will drop you off conveniently right next to a Wal-Mart and within easy walking distance of these photos on your way west to San Angel.

Looking west at the east backyard plaza of lovely, intimate Iglesia San Sabastian Chimalistac. There was a baptism here this April Saturday with balloons, etc sold for the reception in the plaza. Virtually overpowering the Parque de la Bombilla is this hefty Monument to Alvaro Obregon who was assassinated on the spot in 1928. This is the view looking southeast from across Avenida La Paz. No apparent concern for security in this upscale area. Looking west up the little alley called Monasterio between Insurgentes and Revolucion.

From Monasterio alley this is the first view of Plaza del Carmen across busy Avenida Revolucion. Artists selling wares under colorful umbrellas is the delightful commencement of your walk west on Madero, the street on Plaza del Carmen's south side. Looking west at the west end of Plaza del Carmen. The variety of painting styles and subject matter serve well to increase your linger time here. Although high prices are reported by some, prices for art here are still pretty low.
